Learning Lawn Care with Phil Abers

Written By: Sarah Burnett - April 2nd, 2018

Phil Abers is a longtime volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Men’s Garden Club, and Trees Coalition. He is passionate about building a better environment for Spartanburg, and we are so grateful that he is willing to share that passion with Habitat homeowners and program participants.

Many Habitat homeowners come from rental situations with absolutely no experience in exterior home care, least of all lawn care. As they go through the homeownership program, we aim to introduce them to these topics, and Phil Abers assisted us with this by leading a 2-hour Basic Lawn Care Workshop at the end of last month.

Phil explained everything from how grass is planted to how to revive a failing lawn. He talked attendees through the most common grasses in the Upstate and the unique care that each requires, including sunlight, irrigation, weeding, fertilizing, and mowing. Attendees were able to ask questions about their specific challenges, and Phil’s extensive experience gave him the ability to provide each with a sure answer.

Community partners and volunteers like Phil are vital to our mission. Because of his support and the support of those like him, we can confidently prepare our clients for long-term success in homeownership. As we open more of these educational opportunities to children and the public, we will be extending our reach of impact to our clients’ families, friends, and larger communities.

Special thanks to Phil Abers for his wonderful work—we hope that everyone will follow his example and use your gifts to join us in building a brighter, better Spartanburg. Thanks also to Peggy Magarahan, Construction Coordinator at Habitat Spartanburg, for consulting on this program, the Neighborhood Support Committee at Habitat Spartanburg for coordinating the program, and Southside Baptist Church for allowing us the use of their facilities. Your support does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for you!
