Where Does Your Financial Contribution Go?

February 10th, 2020

When you make a financial contribution to a nonprofit organization, you want to trust that the vast majority of the money goes to supporting the core mission and services of the organization. As such, nonprofits and charities are evaluated on what percentage of the funds they raise is used to directly help the people they serve.

Likewise, a common question people have when they give to a local office of a nonprofit that has operations nationwide (such as Habitat for Humanity or The Salvation Army) is whether the money they are donating will stay in the local community.

In the case of Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg, we are proud to say that answer is yes, your money stays local, and yes, the vast majority of funds go to supporting Spartanburg residents.

In fact, every dollar you give to Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg goes to help purchase the construction materials needed for a home project that you select. From lumber to bricks to siding to concrete to shingles to nails to appliances to carpet and on and on — your dollars buy the materials that are needed to build a home for a hard-working local family. It doesn’t get any more direct than that!

That’s not to say that we don’t have administrative costs. While our staff is small, running any organization requires people. But those costs are more than covered by the revenue generate by the mortgage portfolio we manage and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Even though we are a nonprofit, we operate with a keen business approach, exemplified by those two innovative sources of revenue. As a result, we don’t rely on annual fundraising to cover all of our costs — and all the critical money given by local donors can go straight to our core mission.

Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg currently averages building seven new homes annually. In 2020, that number will likely grow to eight, and the organization’s board of directors has set an ambitious goal to increase the capacity to 12 homes a year by 2023. As we work to grow our fundraising to support that mission, it will be important for potential donors to know that whether they contribute $10, $100, $1,000 or $10,000, every penny stays in Spartanburg, and every penny is used to purchase construction materials.

So, if you want to ensure your valuable donations are benefiting people in need right here in Spartanburg, then please consider a gift to Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg.
