Habitat Homeownership

Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg is an ecumenical Christian ministry that changes lives by building safe, decent, and affordable homes in partnership with Spartanburg County community members in need. You might qualify for our homeownership program if you meet the following criteria:

  1. Need for Assistance: You have lived or worked in Spartanburg County for at least one year, and your current housing is substandard in some way. We consider housing substandard if it is structurally defective, transitional in nature, in an unsafe area, or excessively cost-burdensome.
  2. Ability to Pay: Your total household income is within 30 to 60 percent of the area median, your personal income has been stable for at least one year, and you make required payments on your bills and debts on time. You are also a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and you maintain a law-abiding household.
  3. Willingness to Partner: You are willing to complete all program requirements in a timely, honest manner. You are willing to complete Sweat Equity through construction, education, and other community involvement activities. You are willing to live in any of the areas where we might build a home for you and make your monthly mortgage payments on time.

Those who successfully complete the homeownership program will have the opportunity to purchase a home with an affordable mortgage from Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg. The revenue that we receive from these mortgages goes directly towards funding the construction of future homes. All newly constructed Habitat homes are Energy Star Certified, and most have 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom floor plans. These homes are a source of joy, stability, and financial strength for those who purchase them through our program.

We offer information sessions several times a year for those interested in applying to our homeownership program. For more details, please contact our Family Services Coordinator, Sarah Burnett, at 864.591.2221, Ext. 106.

Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg has pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. Policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin.
