GAFFNEY LEDGER: RAISING THE WALL

Habitat for Humanity Spartanburg and Cherokee affiliates held a wall raising ceremony Thursday for a collaborative build effort taking place in Chesnee, S.C. The partnership is the first of its kind between Spartanburg and Cherokee. The home is being funded by the J.M. Smith Foundation, BMW, Broad River Electric Charities, United Way of the Piedmont and the Timken Foundation.

GOUPSTATE: Upcycling Artists turned donated items into works of art

Artists from across the Upstate were presented with a challenge -- find a piece of furniture at the Habitat ReStore in Spartanburg and turn it into a work of art. The 52 pieces of exhibited artwork of upcycled donated furniture were later unveiled at the Upcycled Art Show June 20 at the Events at Drayton Mills.

"There's not even close to enough affordable housing to go around," said Grady, chief research officer for SC Housing. "And when people are struggling to afford a place to live, that leads to all kinds of other problems."

Habitat for Humanity of Cherokee and Spartanburg counties are teaming up to build a house that a deserving, low-income family will soon be able to call home. The home will be located on South Cash Avenue in Chesnee, which straddles the Spartanburg/Cherokee County line.

WSPA: Spartanburg Northside gains new neighbor thanks to Habitat for Humanity

Early Monday morning, The Johnson Group’s American Credit Acceptance and Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg raised the first wall for a new home. The organizations will spend close to 2,000 volunteer hours building a much needed home for Esther Vargas and Domingo Villegas. The couple are retired and have been living in a mobile home with issues: interior structural damage and electrical and plumbing issues.

Despite the drizzle and dreary conditions Monday morning, Pablo Ortega couldn't help but grin. His mother and step-father's new Northside home was finally starting to take shape. "I'm proud that my parents have been able to work with Habit for Humanity of Spartanburg, and that they took the time to work with us," Ortega said. "This is my mother's dream."
